Description
The building is a school and attached schoolmaster's house, constructed in 1856. It features red and blue diaper brickwork with buff brick quoins and dressings, topped with a tiled roof. The schoolrooms are located at the south end, consisting of two rooms with a lean-to on the gable that contains a secondary entrance and cloaks. The main entrance is at the north end, adjacent to the house, and is gabled with an incised inscription above that reads "AD 1856 NATIONAL SCHOOLS / FEED MY LAMBS." The wide central bay is also gabled, with diagonal boarded doors that have elaborate iron hinges. The timber windows include a large window with a two-centred head in the central bay. At the north end is the master's house, which has one bay, is gabled, and extends over the main entrance corridor. The gables are steeply pitched and feature trefoil vents and barge boards. The main domestic door on the side of the house is similar to those of the school. There is a lean-to at the rear. Initially, the schoolrooms were built to accommodate 70 children, and a gallery for infants was added in 1861 by the Marquis of Ailesbury.
