Description

Conifer Cottage is a house formed from two cottages, dating to the late 16th century. It was altered in the early 17th century and extended in the 18th century. The building is timber-framed with red brick noggings and a thatched roof, with a rendered line marking the point of an addition. It is a single-storey and attic structure, originally of 2 bays, with a stack bay added, and later extended by a further 2 bays incorporating a central stair hall. The original section at the north end has framing two panels high, with brick sills and heavy curved corner braces. The second bay of the original section was altered to three panels high, removing the braces. A gabled open porch with a central entrance fronts the extension. The original section has three 19th-century timber casement windows with segmental heads, while the addition has two 2-light timber casements, also with segmental heads. A single leaded window is located opposite the stack. A large external stack is located on the left gable. The roof is half-hipped. Inside the original structure, the roof is supported by queen post trusses, and the spine beams have elaborate chamfer stops with run-out stops.
