Description
The Church of St Barnabas is an Anglican parish church built in 1875. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, featuring blue brick banding and yellow and red bricks around the window heads. The church has a tiled roof and includes a nave with a south-east porch, a chancel with a vestry, and a bellcote. There is a 20th-century parish room attached to the west end, which is not of special interest. The porch is gabled and has flush buttresses. The windows are simple lancets with stone sills and a flush blue brick string, and the eaves are cogged. At the west (south) end, there are three similar windows, with a window head in the gable and triple lancets in the chancel. The tall saddleback bellcote features a cross gable and a single bell opening, while the nave has two small gabled dormers on each side.
Inside, the church is unplastered and has an open timber-framed roof with five bays supported by hammerbeams and wall brackets. There are piers at the west end to support the bellcote. The floor walkways are tiled, and there is a simple chancel arch leading to the long chancel, which has a six-sided open timber roof. The vestry opens to the chancel through a wide low arch. The glass includes coloured margins, with the north chancel window made by Glasby in 1927. The fittings include a square limestone font on five columns, a part-octagon carved pulpit, and a wooden altar rail on scrolled stanchions. The church has furniture and an organ but no pews or monuments, aside from two war memorial brasses.
