Description

The Church of St Nicholas is a parish church built in 1828, with alterations made in the 20th century. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, featuring painted ashlar dressings and a slate roof with overhanging eaves. The church consists of a nave with a western bellcote, a facetted chancel, and a west porch.

The gabled porch includes a plinth and a pointed, stepped outer arch that is surrounded by a sandstone cross, with angle pilasters and blank stepped side arches. The west end of the nave is supported by pilaster buttresses and features a square bellcote with a roundel beneath and louvred chamfered bell openings on the east and west sides. Angle pilasters rise from sandstone corbels, and the pyramidal roof is topped with emaciate sandstone battlements. The side walls of the nave have advanced window bays, each containing two-light windows with wooden tracery, stepped surrounds, and plain bracketed cills. A roundel is located at the east end of the nave, while the lower facetted chancel has a plain east window that matches the others. There are lower 20th-century additions on either side of the chancel.

Inside, the church is plastered and lined to resemble ashlar. The west door features a moulded and painted surround with double panelled doors, and above it are blank quatrefoils within circles. The chancel arch is similar in style, with lower blank arches on either side. The chancel has blank pointed openings on its side walls, and all furnishings are from the 19th century.
