Description

The Church of St Andrew is a parish church built in 1738 and restored in 1872. It is constructed of red brick in English bond with ashlar dressings and features lead roofs with stone coped gables. The church includes a western tower, nave, and chancel. The tower is three stages high, with a chamfered plinth, two stone bands, and an offset belfry stage that has a plain parapet and crocketed corner pinnacles. The belfry stage has semi-circular headed blocked openings with ashlar key and impost blocks on the south and north sides, and a similar louvred opening on the west side with an ashlar surround. The south doorway consists of six panels set in a Gibbsian surround, topped with a pediment that has the date 1738 carved into it. The leaded west window is a taller version of the belfry light. The side walls of the nave feature a plinth and brick dentillated eaves, with two semi-circular headed lights at the west end. The chancel's east window is a Venetian window in the same style, with broad pilasters dividing the lights.

Inside, the nave and chancel are not differentiated, featuring a deeply coved ceiling cornice. The altar rail has turned and fluted balusters that have been reused. There is an octagonal panelled 18th-century pulpit and reader's desk, while all other fittings are from the 19th century, except for the 14th-century octagonal font with traceried panels on the bowl. Notable monuments include a marble wall plaque in the form of an obelisk on the south wall of the nave, dedicated to Willoughby Wood, who died in 1786, featuring an oval cartouche with a rose bush and a single fallen rose.
