Description
The Royal Oak is a 17th-century inn located on the west side of High Street in Easterton. The building features greensand rubble with an inserted timber-framed section that has brick noggings, topped with a thatched roof. It is a single storey and attic structure with three bays. The entrance is located in a 20th-century slated lean-to that covers the first and second bays. The inn has various windows from the 19th and 20th centuries. The third bay, originally the parlour and now a lounge bar, has been raised to two storeys and an attic through a rebuild above the ground floor, showcasing a close stud frame, wavy corner braces, and a steeply pitched gable. The stone gable end features a major stack. To the right, there is a single-storey continuation used as storerooms, which has a pantiled roof. The left gable has been partly rebuilt to accommodate a stack. There are two flush dormers on the front and two on the rear. A rear extension to the parlour bay, which is one bay in brick, was likely originally stables and is now a kitchen. Inside, the parlour contains two parallel longitudinal beams with run-out chamfer stops and exposed scratch-moulded joists, along with a timber fire lintel.
