Description

Farmhouse, dating from the 16th or early 17th century, with alterations in the 19th century. It is timber framed with brick noggings on greensand rubble sills, and some brickwork. The roof is covered in treble roll pantiles, replacing thatch in 1979. The farmhouse is single-storied with an attic, originally four bays, comprising a kitchen bay to the right, two main living bays divided by a back-to-back stack, raised with gables to the north front, and a fourth bay added in the 19th century to the left end. The timber framing has a heavy bressumer, with two panels below and one above, and corner braces to the rear. The wall plate oversails and is chamfered. The entrance is now at the rear, in what is now the dining room (formerly the kitchen bay). The windows are timber casements, dating from the 19th and early 20th centuries. The framing is numbered from the west side. The 19th-century bay is of colourwashed brick with a lower-pitched roof. The main roof is half-hipped to the right. It has a stone stack, rebuilt at the top in brick. Inside, there is a central spine beam with run-out stops and chamfered stops, and a timber fire lintel in an open stone stack that formerly contained an oven. The upper floor and roof were not inspected, but may be of interest.
