Description
Fairfield Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 16th to 17th century. It is constructed of greensand rubble with an upper level featuring closely set timber framing and corner braces, topped by a shingled roof. The building has two storeys and a basement, consisting of three bays, with an additional bay at both ends. There is also a three-bay timber-framed structure that is partly attached to the rear left, which may have originally served as a kitchen-service wing.
The entrance is located in the central bay, leading to a flanking dog-leg stair, with a through hall and a parlour to the right and the first kitchen to the left. The door is an early 19th-century six-panelled design with a heavy moulded frame, raised over two short flights of steps. The flanking bays were likely originally gabled at the front but were altered when the structure was raised from a single storey with an attic to two full storeys in the late 17th to 18th century.
The ground floor features three-light leaded timber casement windows with timber chamfered lintels set in stonework, alongside narrower three-light windows. The basement includes two 16th or early 17th-century chamfered timber windows that are rebated for leading, with diamond timber vertical bars. The stairwell has a 17th-century three-light window set in the framework, as well as a later casement window. There are three original similar windows on the gable end. The rear building is fully framed with corner braces, tension braces, and a gable stack, with the framing standing three panels high. The roof is thatched and has half-hipped ends.
Inside, the main parlour features two parallel longitudinal beams with bar stops to deep chamfers, where the stop has been cut away. There is a good late 17th-century stair with turned vase balusters and a heavy handrail, and a stone fireplace with a timber lintel in the left room.
