Description

The Church of St Martin is a parish church built in 1794, with alterations and additions made in the mid-19th century. It is constructed of red brick with blue headers in Flemish bond, topped with a plain tile roof featuring shaped tile bands and coped verges. The church has a four-bay nave, an apsidal chancel, and a 19th-century north transept.

The nave includes round-headed windows with raised keys and Y-traceried glazing bars. The west entrance features a pointed door with panelled spandrels, flanked by two lancet stair windows with four-centred heads and hood moulds. Above the entrance is a central first-floor window with a round head and hood mould, along with a small round-headed gable window springing from an impost band. A 19th-century square bellcote with a pyramidal lead-covered roof is also present.

The chancel has a round-headed east window with a raised keystone and a moulded arch that springs from imposts, featuring glazing bars in a Decorated tracery pattern. The transept is made of rough-faced ashlar and has a plain tile roof with shaped tile bands and a stone coped verge. The north window is pointed and has three lights with cusped heads and Decorated tracery reminiscent of early 14th-century design, with a sill string that steps down to the east and west. The east door has a moulded surround and a shouldered head.

Inside, there is a west gallery with a panelled rail and an 18th-century King-post roof over the nave. The chancel arch is semi-circular with panelled casing, flanked by a pair of console brackets that support a wooden stake. The transept features an arched-braced collar roof.
