Description

Harecastle Farmhouse is a large farmhouse dating from around 1600. It is constructed of coursed rubble with ashlar dressings and features a plain tile roof, with lateral stacks made of rubble and brick. The building has a U-shaped plan, consisting of a central single-cell hall range that is aligned east-west and faces south, with south-projecting crosswings and large external stacks at the centres of the north, east, and west elevations. The farmhouse is two storeys high with an attic.

The design includes a pair of gabled crosswings that flank a recessed centre. The front elevation has a 1:1:1 window arrangement, featuring five-light chamfered mullion and transom windows with rebated surrounds and tile dripstones. There are also four-light chamfered mullion windows in the attics and a basement beneath the right-hand wing. A 20th-century door is located to the left side of the hall range within a 17th-century opening.

On the north (rear) side, the hall range is flush with the wings, and this elevation is dominated by the chimney stack serving the hall range. It features chamfered mullion windows with rebated surrounds. The principal windows of the wings have four lights, with the attic windows placed centrally, while the ground and first-floor windows are left of centre. These are balanced by two-light windows in the left-hand wing and circular windows in the right-hand wing. The left of the stack has three-light hall range windows. The east elevation includes a two-light window on the ground floor to the left, while the west elevation has a square-headed door to the left of the stack with a massive lintel and a three-light window above.

Inside, the farmhouse features chamfered and stopped ceiling beams throughout, along with a queen strut roof truss.
