Description

Keeper's Cottage is a gamekeeper's cottage built in 1847 for the Methuen estate. It features a brick exterior faced in petrified moss, with a slate roof and ridge stack. The building is designed in a picturesque cottage style, with a two-storey center gabled to the front and single-storey wings. The center has fretted bargeboards and a finial, along with a ceramic plaque displaying the Methuen arms. The first floor has a pair of casement windows, while the ground floor includes a canted bay with a slate roof and casement windows. The west side wall has a pair of casement windows, and the east side has a plank door, both adorned with grotesque head keystones. The wings have end gables featuring bargeboards, finials, and pendants, with each wing on the south side having a pair of casement windows with grotesque head keystones, as well as similar windows and keystones on the end walls. The rear gable of the main range displays a bargeboard with finials and a pendant, and there is a door on the east side. The unique cladding material can be found in the nearby brook.
