Description
The gate piers, gates, and railings adjacent to South Lodge at Pythouse date from around 1869 and were created for the Bennetts of Pythouse. They are made of limestone ashlar and consist of two pairs of piers for the carriage entrance and two side gates. The main piers feature shaped recessed panels and friezes with corniced cappings, and they are adorned with lions holding the Bennett Arms. The side gate piers are topped with ball finials. The side gates are made of cast iron, while the carriage gates are missing. Curved dwarf walls on either side and in front of South Lodge are also present, featuring spearhead cast-iron railings and square end piers.
