Description

This bridge near Swindon Road is a Grade II listed structure made of grey Swindon Portland stone, which is squared and coursed. The arch rings and the east face from the springing point upwards have been refaced with contrasting red and purple engineering brick from the Great Western Railway.

The bridge features a sweeping humpback profile, with gently curving wing walls that continue unbroken along the faces. It has a central arch with a standard span of 30 feet (9 meters), while the side arches are lower, each with a span of approximately 17 feet (5 meters). There is a later tie rod in each spandrel, accompanied by a rectangular plate. The west face retains its roll moulded string course, whereas the east face has been given a plain brick version as part of the refacing. The parapets have stepped inner faces and end in terminating piers that are expressed on the outer faces. Stone coping survives on both sides of the bridge, which has a slight fall to the outer face.
