Description
Hunts Mill Road Bridge is a Grade II listed structure. It appears to have originally been faced with squared and coursed Swindon 'Portland' stone, particularly on the roadway faces of the parapets. The outer faces were not closely examined, but some of the original stone may have been replaced with a different stone, possibly Bath limestone. The soffits seem to have always been made of red brick, although some areas have been patched with red or red and purple GWR engineering brick.
The bridge has a skew of 41 degrees and features a central arch with a standard span of 30 feet (9 meters). The side arches are narrower and not as tall, with all three arches constructed using voussoirs. Each pier is pierced by one transverse arch, which is typical for bridges designed by Brunel. The faces of the bridge extend into gently curving wing walls, which include a stepped string course that runs continuously across. The parapets are stepped on the internal face and are topped with square-edged copings that have a very shallow pitch. Additionally, tie rods with rectangular plates are inserted beneath the string course.
