Description
Nos. 18 and 19 High Street is a terrace house that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the early 18th century and was refronted in the early 20th century. The building is constructed of brick with an iron-framed facade. The original structure has been significantly altered to accommodate the shop. It is two stories tall with an attic and features a slate roof with two gabled dormers.
The front elevation includes two glazed recessed entrances and a side entrance. The shopfront is made of light moulded timber with rounded top corners and has a panelled fascia. The first floor has continuous fenestration in nine bays, featuring moulded columnar glazing bars and rounded cornered flat arches. Above, there is a dentilled cornice and fascia, and the wall rises to form a parapet.
Inside, there are two lotus-headed cast iron columns in No. 17, and a two-panelled early 18th-century door leading to the attic stair. This building is a good example of a once common type of shopfront.
