Description
The Old Laundry is a detached cottage that was originally a laundry, dating from the mid-17th century and altered in the 19th century. It is constructed of rubble stone with a hipped thatched roof and brick stacks, forming a U-plan layout. The building is two stories high and features a three-window west front that faces New Lake. There is a planked door located to the right of center, with a 2-light casement window to the right and a 3-light casement window to the left. On the first floor, there are three 2-light casement windows.
Attached to the right side of the building is a large early 19th-century two-bay drying loggia, which has two elliptical-arched openings facing south and at the ends. The left side of the building has a 3-light and a 2-light casement window at the rear. The rear of the main range includes planked doors within a 19th-century two-bay lean-to porch that features elliptical-arched openings, along with one 2-light casement window on the first floor.
The north wing has 2-light casement windows and a drying loggia at the gable end, while the south wing also has 2-light casement windows. Inside, the cottage contains a chamfered beam with ogee and bar stops, planked doors, and blocked open fireplaces. It was likely converted for use as a laundry for the Stourhead Estate, with the drying loggias added in the early 19th century, resembling a loggia found on the north side of The Spread Eagle.
