Description

The Kennels is a gamekeeper's house and kennels dating from 1794, marked by a datestone over the door that features a Latin inscription and the name Richard Colt Hoare of Stourhead. The building is constructed of dressed limestone with a Welsh slate roof and brick stacks, while the kennels are made of rubble stone with tiled roofs.

The house is two stories tall and has three windows. It features a central six-panelled door with a transom light, flanked by three-light casements. A stone plat band runs along the first floor, with a two-light casement centered above the datestone and three-light casements on either side, all adorned with keystones. The rear range includes a planked door set in a gabled porch, with two-light casements on both the ground and first floors, and single-storey outhouses that include a stable.

The attached kennels have planked doors and two-light windows, with some blocked doorways on the north range. Rubble stone walls at the front enclose dog runs and a stream at the bottom. Inside the house, there are cupboards in the room to the left of the entrance, featuring hexagonal glazing bars, which are reputedly by Chippendale, who is said to have stayed here while working at Stourhead House for Colt Hoare. The interior of the kennels includes a plank and muntin partition, planked doors, flagstone floors, and a former game larder located at the north end of the north range.
