Description
The Estate Office is a detached house, now serving as an estate office, built in the late 18th century. It is constructed of dressed limestone and features a Welsh slate roof with a coped verge on the left and a hip on the right, along with rendered stacks. The building is two stories tall and has a three-window south front, with the entrance located on the left return.
The central projecting bay includes a three-light casement window, flanked by three-light casements in the side bays, and three more on the first floor. This bay is topped with a parapet that has pierced triangles, a feature added by Colt Hoare around 1800. The right return showcases six-panelled doors and a three-light casement, with two-light and three-light casements on the first floor. The left return has a half-glazed door set in a recessed porch, which is adorned with a moulded architrave around the opening, and features three-light casements on both the ground and first floors.
At the rear, there is a door with four fielded panels and an integral transom light, along with 20th-century steel casements and 19th-century wooden casements. Inside, the building retains six-panelled doors set in panelled reveals. It is possible that the original layout of the building was L-shaped or U-shaped, with the rear section later filled in. Historically, it was known as the Cottage and was occupied by the agent in the 19th century. It was also home to the 6th Baronet, Henry Hoare, and his wife during the renovation and rebuilding of Stourhead following a fire in 1902.
