Description
The Spread Eagle Inn is a late 18th-century public house located on the south side of High Street in Stourton with Gasper. It is constructed of Flemish bond brick featuring vitrified headers and stone quoins, topped with a Welsh slate roof that has coped verges and gable end brick stacks. The main building faces east and includes several rear wings.
The inn is two stories high with a three-window front. The central entrance consists of 6-panelled double doors set in a pedimented porch, which has a round arch supported by imposts and a keystone. On either side of the entrance are 16-pane sash windows with flat arches and keystones. A stone plat band runs along the first floor, which features three additional 16-pane sashes. The roof eaves are supported by carved wooden brackets.
To the right, there is an early 19th-century lean-to covered passage with an elliptically-arched opening. Above this passage is a pointed leaded casement window in the attic. Attached to the rear is a projecting two-storey addition from the 1830s, which has 12-pane sashes and a parapet with pierced triangles. The left side of the building has both two-storey and single-storey extensions, including a wing with a 2-light leaded casement and a hipped dormer. The main front range also features a pointed leaded casement in the attic.
At the rear, there are gabled rubble stone wings with casement windows, along with a 20th-century entrance addition. Inside, the inn retains 18th-century joinery, including 6-panelled doors and shutters. The front bar showcases an 18th-century moulded plaster cornice on the ceiling, which is divided into five bays, and an open fireplace with a lintel on stone jambs. The rear early 19th-century drawing room has a fireplace with paterae, while the rear wing contains a blocked open fireplace. Additionally, there is a four-step stone mounting block against the front wall. A painting of the inn from 1790 by S.H. Grimm is reproduced in K. Woodbridge's "The Stourhead Landscape."
