Description

The Grotto Underpass is an underpass designed for a path leading to the Temple of Apollo, located below Zeals Road. It was built between 1760 and 1765 for Henry Hoare. The structure features a curving tunnel with rustic rockwork portals that include large voussoirs. The path continues uphill through a cutting, which is topped with a single rockwork arch. This underpass is likely contemporary with the Rockwork Bridge over Zeals Road, as both are part of the same route to the Temple of Apollo.
