Description
Rockwork Bridge is a Grade I listed rustic bridge located in Stourton with Gasper, part of the Stourhead Gardens. It was constructed between 1762 and 1765 to carry a track from the lake to the Temple of Apollo over the Zeals Road. The bridge is made of rustic limestone and features a segmental arch, rough niches, and revetment walls. The track leading over the bridge is approached by steps that are lined with rockwork, which includes several platforms with niches and 'windows'. A small rockwork bridge frames the path as it crosses the main bridge. The Hermitage, built in 1771 and dismantled in 1814, was part of the picturesque approach to the rockwork bridge.
