Description
The horse trough, likely from the early 19th century, is situated in the lane on the south side of the Garden Lake dam in Stourton with Gasper, near Stourhead Gardens. It was probably created for Richard Colt Hoare of Stourhead House. The trough features a dressed limestone facade in front of the sluice house, with a semi-circular-headed recess that contains the water trough. Above the trough is a recessed moulded panel and a lion mask spout. The structure has a gabled stone roof verge with saddleback coping. At the rear, there is a shed rendered on a stone base with a tiled roof. This lane served as the carriage and bridleway to Alfred's Tower from Stourhead.
