Description

The stone horse trough, located at the junction with West Road in Bishop Auckland, dates from the early 19th century and is designed in the Gothic style. It features a chamfered square plinth at the base, with a wide, rounded basin that projects from the north side. Above this basin is a tall arched niche, which has a segmental head in the lintel and sloping sides. The square plan of the trough transitions into an octagonal stepped spirelet topped with a stone finial, which likely once held a lamp.
