Description

The barn at Kingstead Farm, located off the north side of Salisbury Road in Fonthill Bishop, is a structure likely dating from the late 17th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th century for the Fonthill Estate. It is constructed from dressed limestone and rubble stone, topped with a tiled roof featuring a coped verge on the south side and a half-hip on the north. The barn consists of eight bays.

On the west side, there are corrugated iron doors and a segmental-headed doorway to the right, with two gabled loft doors to the left. The north gable features double planked doors and a planked loft door above, both of which are 19th-century additions. The south gable includes a stone buttress with two offsets. The east side has double sliding doors and 19th-century inserted segmental and semi-circular openings to the left, along with an attached 20th-century implement shed.

Inside, the barn has an 8-bay collar and tie-beam roof supported by two tiers of through purlins, with some curved windbracing still visible in the southern bays. The timber in the northern part of the barn has been partly renewed, and a section of the north bay and a half is divided off by a 19th-century brick partition wall. This barn is a pre-1700 structure that remains among a group of 19th and 20th-century estate farm buildings.
