Description

The bridge across Fonthill Lake is a structure that carries a track over the lake, built in 1826, as indicated by the date on the keystone of the east arch. Constructed from limestone ashlar, it features two segmental arches. The west arch has the initials GM, which stand for George Mortimer, while the east arch displays the date 1826. The south side of the bridge is adorned with panels of tapered Doric columns situated between piers, which are vermiculated only on this side. The abutment walls are slightly curved, and there is a cutwater with no balustrade on the north side. The bridge was designed as a prominent feature of the landscaped park, intended to be viewed from the south, as the north side lacks any decorative detail. George Mortimer acquired the remains of Fonthill Splendens in 1823 and made various improvements to the park, including the widening of the lake.
