Description
The barn at Oakhurst Farm is a mid-18th century structure that incorporates some earlier timbers. It features a 19th century brick cattle shed attached to the southwest side, which is not considered of special interest. The barn is timber-framed, built on a brick and stone plinth, and is clad in weatherboarding with half-hipped tiled roofs.
The barn has a four-bay design with outshots to the northeast and southwest, creating a T-shaped plan. Both the northeast and southwest sides have cart entrances, which have been later replaced by weatherboarding. The southwest side, facing the farmyard, includes a four-light metal-framed casement window inserted above the cart entrance. The part of the southwest side that is covered by an outshot retains some old wide weatherboarding.
Inside, the wall frame consists mainly of straight upright posts, a staggered midrail, and diagonal corner braces, with some reused timbers. The tie beams feature slightly curved tension braces, and the roof structure includes collar beams with trenched purlins and rafters with a ridgepiece.
Historically, Oakhurst Farm was part of the Loxwood Hall estate and served as a main steading owned by the King family from around 1600 to 1900. The barn is depicted on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of 1875. It is a substantially intact mid-18th century barn that is part of a group of farm buildings of similar age, including the farmhouse.
