Description

The gatepiers, gates, and railings at Marlborough College were built between 1876 and 1877, designed by architect G E Street. The gatepiers are made of brick with horizontal rustication, featuring ashlar plinths, cornices, applied pediments, and ashlar ball finials. The piers beside the gates are paired and connected by round arches with moulded voussoirs, modillion cornices, and blocking courses. Other piers are single and topped with ashlar pediments. There is a brick dwarf wall with ashlar coping supporting the railings, which are complemented by elaborate wrought iron gates and railings. G E Street's work at Marlborough College showcases a unique blend of Gothic, Romanesque, and Baroque styles. This structure is part of a group that includes C House, B House, The Museum Block, The Arcade, The Bradleian Building, The North Block, the Porter's Lodge, gates and railings, the Chapel, and A House.
