Description
A House, built between 1845 and 1850, was designed by architect Edward Blore. It is constructed of red brick and features a hipped slate roof, rising to three storeys. The building has continuous ashlar sill bands and six ranges of sash windows with glazing bars, all set within brick "Gibbs" surrounds. There are two Italianate towers that have modillioned cornices and arched lights for flues. The structure includes long and short brick quoins and has elaborate wooden oriels added in the mid-17th century style by Edwin H Crocker in the 1880s. This house is notable for its early revival of 17th-century architectural forms, with its towers being a prominent feature that indicates its true date of construction. In contrast to B House, it has a shallower pitched roof, lacks a modillioned cornice, and does not have dormers, which is more typical of the 1840s. The interior features a remarkable central hall that is top-lit and lined with galleries, which have plain arcading filled in with iron railings. A House is part of a group that includes C House, B House, The Museum Block, The Arcade, The Bradleian Buildings, The North Block, the Porter's Lodge, gates and railings, and the Chapel.
