Description
Porter's Lodge at Marlborough College was built in 1876-1877 and designed by architect G E Street. The building is constructed of red brick and features a pitched tile roof with Gothic moulded coping at the south end and a hipped roof at the north end to accommodate the curve of the road. It has brick chimneys with cornicing and arcuated panels. The lodge is two storeys high and has sash windows with glazing bars and moulded brick jambs. There is a projecting eaves cornice adorned with elaborate modillions. A prominent two-storey porch is topped by a steep gable with moulded coping, ball finials, and acroteria. An arcade with three bays begins under the porch and extends up to the gatepipes, supported by brick piers featuring horizontal rustication, moulded ashlar impost blocks, and moulded brick voussoirs. The Porter's Lodge is part of a group that includes C House, B House, The Museum Block, The Arcade, The Bradleian Building, The North Block, gates and railings, the Chapel, and A House.
