Description

The Museum Block at Marlborough College was built between 1882 and 1883 by architects A E Street and A W Blomfield, based on a design by G E Street, who had passed away before its completion. The building is constructed of red brick and features a hipped tile roof with a balustraded platform. It has brick chimneys adorned with cornicing and arcuated panelling. The structure consists of two storeys and attics, with an elaborately carved wooden modillion eaves cornice.

The façade includes two lower flanking blocks and a series of windows arranged in a two-five-two pattern, featuring sashes with glazing bars and moulded brick jambs. At the centre of the ground floor, there is a moulded brick aedicule with a scrolled broken pediment. Two ornate wooden oriels, added by Edwin H Crocker in the late 1880s, reflect a mid-17th century style. The building also has three attic dormers with casements and glazing bars, two of which have segmental pediments and one with a triangular pediment. The corners of the building are accentuated with rusticated brick quoins.

The Museum Block is part of a group that includes C House, B House, The Arcade, The Bradleian Building, The North Block, the Porter's Lodge, gates and railings, and the Chapel, all contributing to the architectural significance of the college.
