Description
B House, built between 1845 and 1850, is a Grade II listed building designed by architect Edward Blore. It is constructed of red brick and features a hipped slate roof, rising to three storeys with attics. The building has string courses and an ashlar modillion eaves cornice. There are nine ranges of sash windows with glazing bars, along with seven attic dormers that have pedimented gables and casements with glazing bars. Two Italianate towers are present, adorned with modillioned cornices and arched lights that accommodate flues. The building also showcases long and short brick quoins and elaborate wooden oriels in a mid-17th century style, which were added by Edwin H Crocker in the 1880s. Blore's work at Marlborough College is notable for its use of a 17th-century style, which was more common in the 1870s than in the 1840s, while the Italianate towers reflect the architectural trends of the 1840s. B House is part of a group that includes C House, The Museum Block, The Arcade, The Bradleian Building, The North Block, the Porter's Lodge, gates and railings, the Chapel, and A House.
