Description

The Forge is a row of three cottages that have been combined into one house. It dates from the late 17th century and has been altered in the 18th and 19th centuries. The building is constructed of rubble stone, with some flint and brick, and features a thatched roof with four brick chimneys. It is two stories high and has five windows.

On the ground floor, there is a glazed door to the left, accompanied by two 3-light casement windows and a blocked doorway. To the right, there is a mix of a 3-light window, a single-light window, and two 2-light casement windows, with the rightmost bay being a 19th-century addition. The first floor has a 3-light window and four 2-light casement windows. The left side of the building has a 3-light casement on the ground floor and a 2-light casement on the first floor.

At the rear, there is a 20th-century door to the right, with two 2-light leaded and wooden casements to the left. The first floor features 2-light casements beneath raised brick eaves from the 19th century, along with flat-roofed 20th-century extensions on both sides.

Inside, the property has two open fireplaces with cambered chamfered lintels set on stone jambs, and the ceilings are supported by chamfered beams with stepped stops. A winding staircase is retained at the rear, while the first floor includes planked doors and timber-framed partitions. The original 4-bay collar and tie-beam roof from the 17th century is still in place, despite the raised eaves.
