Description
No. 65 Fore Street is an early 18th-century building that stands two stories tall with a cellar. It is constructed of brick on a stone plinth, featuring chamfered bonded quoins. A moulded stone string runs along the first floor, projecting over the quoins and keystones of the glazing bar sash windows. The building has a stone frieze and a moulded cornice topped with a blocking course.
The front facing Wicker Hill includes three arched windows set in stone architraves with keystones, with the central ground floor window framed by a Doric surround of pilasters and an entablature, which may have originally been a doorway. There are cellar grilles beneath the windows. To the right, there is a return section with a similar design, featuring two first-floor windows, one ground floor window, and a six-panel door in the right-hand corner. This door has a stone surround with an architrave and a flat moulded stone hood supported by cut stone scroll brackets, aligning with the first-floor string.
Additionally, there is a projecting wing to the right that faces southeast, which includes an early 19th-century bow window on the ground floor, relocated from another site, and a window above it. The eastern side features a mid-19th-century shop window with fluted pilasters and a blocked doorway with a moulded architrave to the left.
No. 65, along with Nos. 66 to 68, Nos. 70 to 73, the railings and gates to Nos. 68 and 70, a dwarf stone wall to No. 72, No. 64 (Lloyds Bank), and Usher's Brewery Corner Block, form an outstanding group with No. 8 and the premises occupied by K.J. Lestor to the southwest of No. 8 Wicker Hill.
