Description

These buildings, numbers 7 and 8 Fore Street, likely date to the mid-18th century, although the ground floor of number 8 has been modernised. They are two storeys and have an attic. The front of the buildings is faced with ashlar and features vertical strips that create a framed effect. Number 7 has three windows, while number 8 has five, all with glazing bar sashes and moulded architrave aprons. A moulded eaves cornice runs along the top, and number 7 has a Marley tile roof, while number 8 previously had a stone slate roof. There are three dormers: number 7's dormer is plain and contains a modern casement window, and number 8's dormers have moulded flat tops. Gable end chimneys rise off the ridge to the right. A large doorcase is located to the left of number 7, featuring a moulded architrave, Doric block frieze, and entablature, with double panelled doors, the upper panels being glazed. A recent shop front with harsh plate glass has been added to the right. Number 8 has a 20th-century, five-bay extension replicating the Doric entablature of number 7, supported by dividing pilasters and incorporating triglyphs and guttae. The right-hand bay of this extension serves as a doorway. Numbers 1 to 9 Fore Street are historically considered a group.
