Description

FORE STREET 1. 5411 (South West Side) No 5 ST 8558 5/237 II GV

  1. Circa 1864. Formerly part of Salter's Offices. Ornate Italianate 3 storey ashlar fronted, 7 windows wide. Wide set back flanking pilasters. Modillion cornice and blocking course and moulded listel over 2nd floor. Moulded band over 1st floor with panel containing "Samuel Salter and Co." in raised letters, and with carved panels on end pilasters. Dentil cornice over ground floor. Plate glass sash windows: shouldered lintels to 2nd floor with carved rinceaux to moulded reveals, palmette imposts and plain keys. 1st floor windows round headed with wide surrounds, keys and beaded edges to spandrels separated by pilasters with cross-hatched caps. Ground floor rusticated: vermiculated bases and quoins to end pilasters and former wide entrance (now a shop); channelled to rest; 3 windows with struck voussoirs now replaced by 2 shops. Only tall doorway to left unaltered: segmental head, 6 raised and fielded panels to door. The rear is of red brick with ashlar ground floor, ashlar bands and grey brick dressings and quoins. Projecting box eaves, shouldered lintels to 2nd floor windows, round headed 1st floor windows with cast iron glazing bars with join knops.
