Description
71 Fore Street is a late 18th-century building that stands three storeys tall. The front is made of ashlar stone with a projecting plinth, cill bands on the first and second floors, and end pier strips. The ground floor features rusticated stonework. At the top, there is a simple cornice and a balustered parapet with moulded coping, while the roof is hipped with slate and has set-back chimneys. The first and second floors have three ranges of windows that are grouped towards the centre, featuring plate glass sashes. The central door has four panels and a rectangular fanlight with an interlaced diagonal pattern, situated under a much-altered porch. The original porch was Ionic with a balustrade, but it has been modified to a Doric style with a blocking course. The front has pitched paving.
At the rear, there is a two-storey brick extension added later, which includes an end bay with a quadrant corner and two round-headed windows on the north side, complete with stone architraves. Another large extension also features rounded windows, an outside chimney stack, and a stone panel depicting a lion rampant carrying a shield. There is a pitched path leading to the pavement.
This building is part of an outstanding group that includes Nos 65 to 68, Nos 70 to 73, the railings and gates to Nos 68 and 70, a dwarf stone wall to No 72, No 64 (Lloyds Bank), and Usher's Brewery Corner Block, along with No 8 and the premises occupied by K.J. Lestor to the southwest of No 8 Wicker Hill.
