Description

Nos 2 and 3 on Fore Street are older houses that were refronted around 1700. They are two stories tall with an attic and constructed from ashlar stone. The buildings feature a projecting plinth, a string course at the first-floor level, and a narrow moulded cornice with a parapet that has moulded coping. Originally, there were four tall carved vases on the parapet, but now only three remain, with the right-hand vase missing. The stone tile roof has three pedimented dormers, with the central one being segmental and all having heavily moulded heads, each containing two-light casements and decorative leadwork on the front verges.

On the first floor, there are seven glazing bar sash windows with bracketed cills and stone architrave surrounds. The ground floor features an eight-panel central door set in a stone doorcase with engaged Doric columns, an entablature with a block triglyph and rounded frieze, a moulded cornice, and a segmental modillioned pediment. Barclay's Bank occupies the left side of the door and has modern windows, along with a yard entry in the left-hand corner. The ground floor of No 2 has been altered and 'restored' with a central replica Doric doorcase that has a segmental pediment, a six-panel door, and steps protected by railings. This doorway is flanked by glazing bar sash windows with bracketed cills and moulded architraves.

No 3 retains railings for a small area and has recently been enhanced with a projecting cast iron bank sign and ornate cast iron panelled standards with a lamp overthrow. In the east gable wall, there are exposed traces of timber framing, and the roof displays a fine array of wind braces. Nos 1 to 9 on Fore Street form a group.
