Description
The corner block of the former Usher's Brewery, located between Nos 68 and 70 on Fore Street, was designed in 1915 by W. W. Snailum in the Brewer's Baroque style. This building features a corner pavilion that slightly protrudes from the main structure. It is constructed of ashlar stone and has ornate pedimented fronts with one bay facing south and west. The building includes pedimented breaks on both sides, with rustic quoins topped by fluted brackets at the corner bands. It is supported by paired rustic pilasters adorned with fruit and flower sculptures. A modillion cornice and open pediments are present, along with blind keyed oculi on each pediment, which are flanked by swags of fruit and flower carvings above the windows on the first and second floors. There is a pitched path pavement leading from this corner block to No 8 Wicker Hill. This building is listed for its group value, as it forms an outstanding ensemble with Nos 65 to 68, Nos 70 to 73, the railings and gates to Nos 68 and 70, the dwarf stone wall to No 72, No 64 (Lloyds Bank), and the Usher's Brewery Corner Block, along with the premises occupied by K.J. Lestor to the southwest of No 8 Wicker Hill.
