Description
Nos 16 and 17 Market Place are early to mid 17th century buildings that stand four storeys tall. Each has a single gabled plastered front and an old tile roof facing Market Place, while the west side facing Minster Street is irregular and partly tile hung. The ground floor features modern shop fronts.
No 16 has oversailing upper floors, with one attic sash window, two sash windows on the second floor, and a three-light casement window on the first floor. No 17 boasts an elaborate timber-framed two-storey bay with curved sides on the first and second floors. Each floor has a 16-light mullioned and transomed window, with moulded transoms and window heads. The bay is topped with a wide moulded and bracketed cornice featuring turned pendants, and the panelled aprons display faint remains of fleur-de-lis relief. The shop fronts are covered by a later slate pent roof.
Inside, No 16 has the original wall frame exposed on the first floor, along with a room featuring early 17th century panelling and a fireplace with an overmantel. No 17 contains a good 18th century dog-leg staircase with an unusual wedge plan.
Nos 15 to 19 Market Place form a group.
