Description
Highway Cottage and the attached Wendy House are located on the south side of High Street in Heytesbury. The house dates from the mid-18th century to the early 19th century and features Flemish bond brickwork, while the Wendy House is built in English garden wall bond brick. Both structures have tiled roofs and brick stacks.
The house is two stories tall with four windows, all fitted with sash windows. The main entrance is a door with six fielded panels, positioned to the right of center. To the right of the door is a 16-pane sash window, and to the left are two 12-pane sashes with thick glazing bars. On the first floor, there are three 12-pane sashes and one 6-pane sash. The attic includes a hipped dormer with a two-light casement window on the left side.
The single-storey Wendy House has a gable end facing the road, featuring a six-panelled door and a 12-pane flush sash window. It has a half-hipped roof and is connected to the house by double planked doors that lead to the yard. At the rear of the house, there are two early 20th-century canted bay windows with French doors and a half-glazed door between them, while the first floor has a mix of 4-pane and 12-pane sashes. The right side of the annexe was previously partly open-fronted but now contains 20th-century casements and a door.
Inside the house, there are six-panelled doors and doors with four fielded panels. The staircase features dog-leg construction with stick balusters and turned newels. A deeply chamfered beam with run-out stops can be found in the eastern part of the house, which may be a remnant from a previous structure that was partially destroyed by fire in 1765.
