Description
West Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 15th and 17th centuries, situated in Newton Toney. It is constructed of flint with limestone dressings, and has tiled roofs. The building is two storeys and has attics. It originally comprised a four-bay front, incorporating a three-bay 15th-century house set at a right angle to the right. The original entrance was in the second bay, leading to a through stair hall, with a room to the right containing a large stack, likely a service room now used as a drawing room, and two heated rooms to the right with a central stack. The front door was replaced in the late 19th century with an arched doorway and chamfered surround. There are three-light stone mullioned windows with labels, including a two-light window over the door and two-light windows within raised gables over the first and third bays. The fourth bay is also gabled at a lower level and returns as a cross wing. The chimneys have clustered shafts crafted from brick. The cross wing, containing earlier fabric, was extended around 1980 with a substantial matching block, terminating in a cross block, all built in the same style. Internally, the roof at the west angle features two arch-braced collar trusses, king posts, a diagonal ridge, and clasped purlins, with curved wind braces. The main block was refitted in 1840, with further alterations in 1956. The roof of the main block includes cambered collars, raking braces, and butt purlins, with an intermediate truss featuring wind braces and inverted wind braces to the lower purlin.
