Description
The Old Rectory is a parsonage, now a house, built in 1778 for Reverend J. Akins. It features Flemish brickwork on a stone plinth and has a tiled roof. The building is two storeys high with attics and has a central entrance hall. To the left of the hall are a drawing room and a passage leading to the rear, which includes a stair and kitchen. To the right, there is another drawing room and a later kitchen. The front elevation has five window bays with a central six-panelled door set in an arched recess. This door is framed by a pilaster doorcase with consoles that support an open pediment. The windows are flush framed with 12 panes, and the left drawing room windows are set lower, while the ground floor openings have segmental heads. There is a canted bay window for the dining room on the right return. The building has brick dentilled eaves and a hipped roof with two hipped dormers on the left return. There are stacks on the rear walls of the front rooms. Inside, the drawing room features a plaster cornice, the study has a panelled dado, and the dining room includes a black marble fireplace with an Edwardian surround. There is also a good iron fireplace on the first floor. Some reset 12th-century stones are located by the rear door, likely from an earlier church.
