Description

Nos 46 and 47 on Folly Lane is a house that has been divided into two separate residences. It dates from the late 17th century to the late 18th century and is constructed of rubblestone with a stone slate roof and ashlar stacks. The building has an L-plan layout, but an added wing makes it square in shape. It stands two storeys high with an attic and features two windows on the front.

The original 17th-century entrance for No 46 is positioned at right angles to Folly Lane. To the left of the door, there is a drip mould, and to the right, a four-light ovolo moulded mullion window with a king mullion and a drip mould. On the first floor, there are two windows: a two-light and a three-light ovolo mullioned window, both with drip moulds. The gabled attic has one two-light ovolo mullioned window, also with a drip mould.

The right side and entrance front of No 47 features a gable with a small round-headed window at the top right and a 20th-century window at ground level. A 20th-century porch, which has a copied mullioned window, is attached to the 18th-century wing, which includes a three-light ovolo mullion window to the right. On the first floor, there are two two-light mullioned windows set into the gabled eaves. At the rear, there is a 20th-century extension and three mullioned windows.

This house was originally an estate cottage of Shaw Hill House, which was demolished in the early 20th century. The additional wing, featuring copied mullioned windows, is believed to be work from the estate in the 18th century.
