Description
The Hayes is a farmhouse that has been converted into a detached house, dating from the early 19th century. It is constructed from limestone ashlar and features a hipped Welsh slate roof with ashlar stacks. The building is two stories high and has three windows across the front. The central door is notable for its six fielded panels with central beading, a fanlight above, and a trellised tent porch. On either side of the door are 20-pane sash windows. There is a plat band at the first floor level, which has three 24-pane sashes and plain pilasters at the sides. The building also has lead rainwater goods and deep eaves.
On the left side, there is a 20th-century door, a sash window, and a two-light casement window in the basement, along with a 24-pane sash window on the first floor. The right side features a 16-pane sash window and a central door that leads to a former basement kitchen, with 24-pane sashes on both the ground and first floors. At the rear, stone steps with cast-iron railings lead up to French windows that are flanked by 20-pane sashes, and there is a central round-arched sash window with a balcony above, along with sashes on either side.
The interior retains original joinery, including shutters and doors, a staircase with stick balusters and a continuous moulded handrail, and a reeded fireplace surrounded by paterae in the drawing room to the left of the entrance. The Hayes is a good example of a Regency farmhouse in this area.
