Description

A terrace of four early 19th-century houses, numbers 8, 10, 12 and 14, with numbers 10 and 12 now forming a hotel. The houses are built of ashlar with a Welsh slate roof and are in a Regency style. They are three storeys high and have eight windows each. Numbers 8 and 14 are flanked by gabled projecting units, while numbers 10 and 12 form a central grouping. Numbers 8, 10 and 12 have glass-panelled doors set within Regency porches, which feature a fluted frieze. The porches have four canted bays with 16-pane sashes, reeded casings and a quarterfoil frieze. Number 14 has a Gothic door case and a battlemented porch. The first floor of numbers 10 and 12 features a fine wrought iron balcony with a canopy, behind which are six tall casements with margin lights. Numbers 14 and 16 have elegant cast-iron canted balconies, and unusual French windows with margin lights. A band with guilloche decoration is located at second-floor level. There are eight 9-pane sashes on the second floor, two of which are blind. Numbers 10 and 12 have an ornamental plaster cornice, while numbers 8 and 14 have decorated gable eaves, and number 14 has a classical plaque. Pilasters are on the sides and at the centre. A three-storey wing is attached to the left side of number 14, with two 12-pane sashes in round-arched panels to the first floor above the porch, and a square-headed entry. There are two sashes to the second floor, a cornice and blocking course. The right return has sashes, including one with a round-arched head to the first floor. The rear elevation is plastered and contains assorted windows, primarily 20th-century casements.
