Description

The Sydney Buildings at numbers 26, 27, and 28 are a group of three terrace houses built around 1820, with 20th-century additions. They are situated on a sloping site alongside a canal, rising to the south and stepped up from number 26 to number 28. The buildings are constructed from limestone ashlar with single-pitched slate mansard roofs. Each roof has two late 19th-century dormers and moulded stacks rising from the coped party walls. The architectural style is reminiscent of John Pinch.

The buildings are two storeys with attics and lower ground floors, each featuring a two-window front. The ground floors have channelled rustication with radial voussoirs above the doors and windows, each topped with a dropped keystone. Coped parapets and cornices sweep up to the left of each house. Ground floor platbands are present, along with first-floor sill bands. Number 26 has two-over-two-pane sash windows in the dormers and plate glass sash windows below. The right side of number 26 displays a late 19th-century four-panel door with a rectangular window to the right. Number 27 is similar, with a door to the left. Number 28 incorporates 20th-century two-light casement windows in the dormers and six-over-six-pane sashes below. A small rectangular window and a six-panel door, glazed to the top with circular central panels, are also visible, with a reeded lintel and a painted overlight featuring a lozenge pane.

The rear displays a parapet and cornice that sweep up as at the front, continuing around the full height of canted bays to numbers 26 and 27, each with paired dormers. Number 28 is wider, with three plate glass sash windows in the dormer. The interiors were not inspected.
