Description

Sydney House is a detached house built in 1829 by John Pinch, with alterations made in the mid-19th century. It overlooks the Kennet and Avon Canal at the rear. The house is constructed of limestone ashlar and has a single-pitched slate mansard roof with moulded stacks to the gable ends. The front of the house is symmetrical and three bays wide, featuring a later two-storey projecting porch with a coped parapet, a floating cornice, and a six-panel door with an overlight, which is likely original. Small four-pane sashes are present in the porch returns. Six-pane sashes are found on the first floor, and two-pane sashes with cornices on consoles are on the ground floor. The rear elevation, three stories high, includes a central two-storey block similar in style to the front porch, with a parapet, cornice, and platband, featuring paired plate glass sash windows on each floor. Dormers include six-pane sashes, while the outer ranges at ground floor have two-pane sashes with cornices on consoles, and the lower ground floor exhibits banded rustication. The interior has not been inspected. A design submitted to the Bathwick Estate Office, dated 1829 and signed JP, illustrates a single-storey Greek Revival porch where the existing double-height porch stands.
