Description

19 and 20 Darlington Place are a pair of terrace houses built in the early 19th century, likely before 1830, with some alterations from the late 19th and 20th centuries. They are constructed from limestone ashlar and feature slate roofs with moulded stacks on the party wall and the right return. The houses have a double depth plan and are two storeys tall, with an attic in No. 20 on the left and lower ground floors.

Each house has a two-window range, a continuous coped parapet, and a cornice. No. 19 has a double pitched roof and six-over-six pane sash windows. The left ground floor window has louvered shutters, while the right features a timber lintel above a fixed twelve-pane window. This window is above a single-storey projecting porch that has a blocking course as a parapet and a painted surround to a six-panel door. The forecourt has been removed on the left side to allow light into the lower ground floor.

No. 20 has a toothed facade on the left, suggesting that the terrace was not completed. It has a late 19th-century attic, likely with a flat roof between the stacks, and horned plate glass windows, with the left ground floor window also having louvered shutters. It features a similar porch to No. 19, with a late 19th-century four-panel door and a 20th-century glazed lean-to conservatory at the front. The interiors of both houses have not been inspected.

This development is part of the Bathwick Estate and is named after Henry Vane, the 4th Earl of Darlington, who inherited the estate from the Countess of Bath in 1808. John Pinch the Elder was involved in much of the development on this estate.
