Description
No. 16 Darlington Place is a terrace house located in the Sydney Buildings, built in the early 19th century with alterations made in the late 19th century. It is constructed from limestone ashlar, with the roof not visible and moulded stacks at the gable ends. The house has a double depth plan and features a projecting wing on the right side.
The exterior consists of three storeys, including an attic storey and a lower ground floor, with a two-window range. The late 19th-century attic storey makes this house taller than the rest of the terrace, featuring a low coped parapet and cornice, along with two plate glass sash windows. The second floor has a cornice that aligns with those of adjacent houses, above a six-over-six pane sash window on the left and an eight-over-eight pane sash window on the right. On the first floor, there is a projection to the right with a parapet, cornice, and a six-over-six pane sash window at the front, with a later conservatory below. The front of the house has a projecting flat-roofed porch with panelled sides and a lintel above a six-panel door. To the left, there is another small projecting wing.
The interior has not been inspected. This development is part of the Bathwick Estate and is named after Henry Vane, the 4th Earl of Darlington, who inherited the estate of the Countess of Bath in 1808. John Pinch the Elder was involved in much of the development on this estate.
