Description
Sydney Lodge is a house that is part of an irregular terrace backing onto the Kennet and Avon Canal, built around 1830. It is constructed from limestone ashlar, with an unseen roof featuring moulded stacks at the gable ends and a left-of-centre ridge. The building has an L-shaped plan with a projecting south wing.
The exterior consists of two storeys and a lower ground floor, displaying a four-window front. It features a central Ionic porch, with an advanced one-bay wing to the south and three recessed bays to the north. The design includes a coped parapet, a cornice, a first-floor sill band, a ground floor platband, and a plinth. The windows are plate glass sash, with those on the ground floor having cornices supported by consoles; the left bay on the ground floor is blind. The former doorcase, which has a cornice and pilasters, is now fronted by a later prostyle portico with Ionic columns and an entablature. The six-panel door includes circular panels at the base and top, along with margin lights and overlights. The two first-floor windows flanking the portico have balconettes. The interior has not been inspected.
